Barcelona Province
The province is dominated by Barcelona city, the second
largest city in Spain, however it also includes miles
of coastline that is popular with tourists on holiday.
Barcelona city is a major international cultural centre
and a major tourist destination in Spain wth frequent
flights from low-cost carriers.
Nestled between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat
and Besňs, the city is located along the Mediterranean
coast, in the comarca of Barcelončs on the northeast
coast of the Iberian Peninsula.
There are two variations to the foundation of Barcelona
- according to one story Hercules founded it 400 years
before the building of Rome, the second story credits
Hamilcar Barca for founding the city. The city has Collserola
as its backdrop, and many small hills inhabit its surface
area of about 100.4 sq km. Monuments of Romanesque,
Gothic and Renaissance periods, or still earlier are
still preserved in the city. Barcelona was also the
venue for the 1992 Summer Olympics.
