Calatayud, is an important town in Aragon with a history dating back
to the Roman era.
The most prominent feature of Calatayud is the well preserved Arab castles
that were once part of one of the oldest defensive systems in Muslim Spain .The
town has an impressive number of palaces and medieval homes, and the city attractions
include Mudejar architectural sites.
The San Andrés church, the Church of Santa María, the Sanctuary of Nuestra
Señora de la Peña, and the Plaza Mayor with the City Hall are worth a look during
your visit, as is as well as the Church of San Pedro de los Francos, now a National
Monument.
Out and about around the area are some popular tourist destinations. Visit
Daroca, a walled town with Arab remains, as well as Ariza, famed for its well
preserved Jewish quarter. Also worth a visit are La Almunia de Doña Godina,
the outstanding fruit and horticulture centre, and Fuendetodos, which has the
house where Francisco de Goya was born and an Engraving Museum.
There are many spa's around here, including Paracuellos de Jiloca or Jaraba,
all having waters with therapeutic properties.
Calatayud is in a landscape with waterfalls and underground galleries. For
nature enthusiasts Gallocanta lake, one of the largest steppe lakes in the country
and a haven for many migratory birds, is a must see destination.

Traditional cuisine here includes Borage and sweet onions, as well as roast
lamb with breadcrumbs stewed with grapes. The local menu has cold meat and cheese
specialities ideal with a glass of local wine.
