Santander, your first look at Spain if you take the ferry service from
Plymouth, is an elegant town against a natural backdrop of sea and mountains.
Always a popular tourist destination with many attractions such as the famous
El Sardinero beach, the promenade and the La Magdalena peninsula.
Nearby the the Altamira Caveshas some of the most important cave paintings
of Quaternary art - a World Heritage site- that also has a museum. The Cabárceno

In Santander explore the picture perfect area of Paseo de Pereda, well known
for its typical houses with miradors, and its gardens before visiting the 13th
century Cathedral, one of the oldest buildings herel.
The Plaza Porticada, in a Neoherreran style, is looked over over by several
public buildings and lively streets such as Arrabal or el Cubo.
Visit the popular and active market of la Esperanza before moving on to the
Fine Arts Museum and the Menéndez Pelayo Stately Home.
Santander has some beautiful beaches in the area such as Los Peligros, la Magdalena
and Biquinis, with its calm waters protected from the wind by the bay overlooking
the Cantabrian Sea. There is also the Cantabrian Maritime Museum, one of the
most comprehensive maritime museums in Spain.
The local food in Santander includes rabas which is fried squid, and
bocartes rebozados ,breaded whitebait, along with the regional speciality
creamy stew Cocido montañés.
