Torrelavega
Founded by Garci Lasso I de la Vega, Torrelavega lies adjacent to the beautiful
village of Santillana De Mar.
The second largest town of the Cantabrian region, this medieval town is in
a agricultural area based on live stock farming, .
Visiting Torrelavega in mid August is recommended as it is the time of the
Virgin Grande fiesta- with a floral gala and parade of floats.
The most significant tourist attraction of the region is the Viernoles site
which is also the focal point of the town with many quaint buildings bordering
the narrow alleys.
Visitors to Torrelavega should never miss out an excurision to the Altamira
caves - the inner chamber has several invaluable paintings done in ochre, red
and black and traces of human inhabitance can be made out from the stone implements
found here.
Try the local 'polkas', regional specialty made of puff pastry inthe restuarants
and bars - there are also clubs that offer entertainment until the early hours
of morning.
