Guides & Maps on Castile Leon

Famous for its many castles and monuments, Leon is the largest province of Spain and is located in the region of Castile-Leon.

Set on an enormous plateau, its many landscapes, natural parks and mountainous areas makes it an ideal place for trout fishing (that draws many tourists from far and wide).

In Leon city, take a stroll through the old town set on a riverside, enveloped by the remains of the medieval ramparts that offer a bustling market and many tranquil places to laze around.

It is never out of season for a memorable sojourn to Leon, boasting an impressive annual calendar packed with festivals of all hues and shades. San Juan y San Pedro and Semana Santa, the major festivals of León are worth checking out.

The spectacular remains left from Roman gold mining at Las Medulas in Carucedo and the romantic castle that slips into the River Esla at the town of Valencia de Don Juan are must see destinations

Savour an array of mouth watering Leonese cuisine including smoked beef (cecina), the hard hitting garlic soup and the superb variant of blood sausage of morcilla.

The important cities include the capital city of Leon, Astorga, Ponferrada and Sahagun.

Days Out in the Leon province
>> Castillo de los Templarios at Ponferrada - an erstwhile hill-fort and later a Roman citadel before it was converted into a palace in the 12th century by the Templar knights. Situated on the route of the pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela this building takes pride in its entrance which involves crossing the moat on a drawbridge and its twelve original towers which reproduce the shapes of the constellations.

>> Santa María de León Cathedral at Leon city - one of the finest in Europe dating back to the 13th century, it took 200 years for its completion. Its matchless towers and steeples, and the sheer multitude of stained glass windows (as many as 250 of them) will leave you wonderstruck

>> The Sahagún Museum at Sahagun - the erstwhile convent of the Benedictines, presently houses the Sahagún Museum with an impressive collection of artefacts
>> Las Médulas at Carucedo - declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1997, Las Médulas encompasses the remains of Roman goldmines
