Palencia is a province of Castile Leon and its landscape
makes an interesting mosaic of contrasts encompassing
the majestic Cantabrian Mountains that taper right into
the sky, vast virgin forests and innumerable vineyards
and corn fields bursting with a riot of colors.
This province is a rich treasure house sprinkled with
many rudiments of the medieval epoch.
The capital is Palencia city. Check out the majestic
Gothic Cathedral that towers over the Visigothic crypt
and its museum; the imposing medieval sculpture of Cristo
del Otero; and the Church of San Martin.
Other noteworthy towns include Cervera de Pisuerga,
Aguilar de Campoo, Frómista, Venta de Baños, Paredes
de Nava, and Carrión de los Condes.
For the mountain sports enthusiasts, the Picos de Europa
Mountains and the remote Natural Park of Fuentes Carrionas
laced with many glacial lakes are ideal retreats.
Semana Santa (Holy Week) tops the event list by offering
a heady mix of firecrackers, church bell chimes and
goodies like bread rolls and lemonade.
