Berga
The town of Berga, on the edge of the Pyrenees, has a long history as an industrial
centre, but even so the town still has its fair share of attractions with its
vibrant culture and festivals.
Berga has a few medieval monuments and castles.
Berga gets its name from the ancient Iberian tribes named 'Bergistani'
who earlier occupied the region, and the town spreads along an area of 22.54
square km- well connected by road and motorways to the rest of the Barcelona
region and easily accessible from any part of Spain.
The castle of Berga is a significant historic monument that has witnessed the
passing of time.
Festa De La Patum is a major crowd pulling event of the region. The festival
is celebrated with a lot of fanfare in this Catalan city - accompanied by drum
beats and music, the festival procession is a real feast to the eye with mystical
and symbolic figures matching steps rhythmically. The fireworks and drinks add
an extra atmosphere.
Visitors to Berga can get a lot of information about the place, and its historical
significance, by simply strolling along its streets. Visit the market area,
Passeig de la Industria , for the Saturday markets. Shop in the Carrer
Major where you can get almost everything.
Travelling around, visit the forests of Queralt, ot take in in the breathtaking
view offered from the Queralt sanctuary, which is otherwise known as the 'balcony
of Catalonia'. The caves of Quevalt also preserve an image of Our Lady of Queralt.
