Figueras is best known for being the town where the legendary painter
Salvador Dalí was born and has the famous Teatre-Museu Dalí.
Located between the Pyrenean mountains and the Costa Brava, Figueras has a
strategic locationand makes it well worth a visit as nearby are many beautiful
beaches, a lively marina, and national parks such as the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà
that teems with water birds.
This town has a long Catalan history, and as you walk around takes you on a
cultural journey through its museums, palaces and a festival calendar that has
fiestas throughout the year.
The many tourist attractions offered by this city include the old medieval
walls, the remains of the old defensive city walls, and the Plaza del Ayuntamiento,
which is in a Neoclassical style and near the council building, as well as the
Carrer Magre, famous for its old Jewish quarter.
Also worth a look at is the church of Sant Pere, and the buildings around the
centre that are examples of Modernist and Neoclassical architecture..
The castle of Sant Ferran, one of the largest in Europe, is an 18th century
fortress built on a hill, and one of the must see attractions whilst sightseeing.
In Figueras the La Rambla is a lively commercial street with modernist buildings
side-by-side with the Neoclassical styled ones.
The cuisine of Figueras is comprised of mainly fresh fish, straight out of
the nets, which are served boiled, baked, grilled or in sauce. Try out the popular
"novell" . a rosé, wine and the sweet wines.
