Salt
Salt is located to the west of Girona along the Ter river.
In stark contrast to Girona with its art galleries and smart boutiques Salt
is a simple agricultural town.In fact, Salt is known more for its strange name
than anything else.
Salt offers unique opportunities for mountaineering, trekking and cycling.
There are also quite a few rambling and cycling routes. The Salt-Bescano greenway
trek, for example, takes you past market-gardening areas and green pasture lands.
The Bassa d'en Peixet lake is also en route and the surrounding woods a rich
habitat for rare species of flora and fauna.
The water museum, a fortified house located in the oldest part of the town,
is the place to swot up on Salt's history. A series of pictures show the various
ways water was utilised for agriculture, manufacturing and power-generation.
One of the highlights of Salt is the International Theatre Festival which is
held every year and is known as the Temporada Alta festival. Theatre companies
from all over the world participate in this prestigious festival.
To sample the local fare ask for duck with orange sauce in any of local restaurants.
